Paul A. Marchena, CPCU, ARM
A native from the island of Curacao, Dutch Antilles, Paul has over 17 years of experience in the risk management consulting and insurance placement arena, and is fluent in four languages (reading and writing). His industry specialization areas are manufacturing, distribution, and restaurants.
As the principal of Melo Risk Advisors, he is responsible for acquisition and day-to-day management services for a spectrum of both local and regional companies. He helps companies deal with the potential impacts of risk, and helps them build enterprise value by turning cost centers into cost savings in multiple risk management program components.
During the process he also assists them with re-engineering their risk management approach and processes, helping achieve higher efficiencies, cost savings, compliance, and maximized protection of going concern and continuity.
Over a span of 10 years Paul worked for both Marsh and Willis, two of the world’s largest insurance brokers. In 1999 he joined Marsh, and first became involved with large owner controlled insurance projects (OCIPs). Based on his successful performance, he was awarded the opportunity to co-manage an OCIP for a large Japanese automobile manufacturer for the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Alabama. Paul’s next OCIP was for one of the nation’s largest financial institutions in North Carolina. All OCIPs that included Paul’s involvement were completed to the clients’ full satisfaction. Subsequently, Paul was asked to become manager of the retail insurance practice for Marsh in their Grand Cayman office. During Paul’s tenure, his team also assisted several large organizations respond to and mitigate their large claims in the aftermath of hurricane Ivan in 2004.
In 2006 he then joined Willis. In that role he continued to assist several Caribbean regional executives with general risk management and insurance placement advice, business continuity, crisis management, risk control, and other operational risk management issues. He has co-led situational role playing and helped critique and design business continuity solutions.
He began his career in 1997 as an underwriter trainee at Royal Sun Alliance and proceeded to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a junior risk consultant working on domestic and international clients.
Paul obtained his degree in Risk Management & Insurance from the prestigious Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. He holds the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designations. He is a former Board Member of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and spearheads their large corporate membership segment. He is also a former Big Brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Middle Tennessee, former Board Member BBBS of the Cayman Islands, and continues to support BBBS of Middle Tennessee as an active volunteer.
